  1. Basic dojo formalities for entering and bowing to the sword

  2. Knowledge of basic dress and tying the Hakama

  3. Basic parts of the sword

  4. Introduction to Shin Kata

  5. The draw, clear, and return of the sword

7th kyu through 6th kyu

  1. Empty hand bunkai

  2. Saya Kihans

  3. Tsuka Kihans
    Basic terms available upon request

5th kyu through 4th kyu

  1. Den Kata

  2. Empty hand bunkai

  3. Shin and Den kata and bunkai

  4. Introduction to mirror image

  5. Sitting and standing kata

3rd kyu through 2nd kyu

  1. Sa Kata

  2. You Kata

  3. Sha Kata

  4. Bunkai kneeling and standing

1st kyu to Shodan

  1. Makko kata

  2. Bunkai kneeling and standing

  3. Empty hand waza with 6 kata

  4. Empty hand against the sword

  5. Saya applications against drawn sword

  6. Saya applications against other weapons

  7. Show wrist and te waza without the katana (sword)

  8. Show at least 50 variations against an aggressor with/without sword. Must show control of the aggressor. Time in grade is left up to the rank examinar, and how long a student has been training in empty hand martial arts.
